Steel engraver
I needed to engrave some steel plates which I can do with a Dremel, but trying to hold a Dremel and trace lines by hand was very frustrating.  I also wanted to be able to engrave the same plate over and over again.
I used a machine that did this when I was in the Navy to engrave plaques, so I looked online for one and could only find laser or mechanical CAD machines which were way too much machine for what I needed to do.
I decided to build a replica of the machine I used in the Navy, and here's the results.  I had a lot of fun designing and building this fella.
I sketched a design out from memory and began by choosing a few pieces of steel.
Here's the steel that will become the base of the machine. I chose to angle cut the steel so it would be a closed structure.
Here's the base rough welded together. I'm checking to make sure it's square before I finalize the welds.
Here are the pylons that will hold the bulk of the engraver, and the brackets that will attach them to the machine.
The base with the welds finalized, and the brackets welded onto the pylons. The holes for the pylon bolts are also drilled into the base.
Another view of the pylon brackets.
Prepping the bottom of the base for the bolts to be welded into place. The holes for the bolts are bigger so the head of the bolt can sit flush with the bottom. Brackets have also been welded on that will hold the the base plate in place.
Checking to make sure the bolts fit the brackets.
Here's another view of the bolted on pylons.
Here's the pieces that will build the head of the device all cut and drilled.
Here's the head of the engraver assembled and attached to make sure it fits.
The shiny spots are where I've welded in the bolts that will be used to hold the main plate down.
Testing the main plate to be sure it fits.
This is a close up of the bolt and bracket that are used to secure the main plate.
Here's the main plate drilled and being tested for the fasteners that will be used to hold the engraving plates in place.
Fully assembled, painted and ready to work. As soon as I get some cool engravings done Ill post them here :D
